1927 Max Carey, who played 17 years with the Pirates before he was dismissed, returns to Pittsburgh in a Brooklyn uniform and makes a clean steal of home in the 6th. It is his 33rd and last steal of home.
1959 Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches one of the most remarkable games in major league history. Haddix tosses 12 perfect innings, retiring the first 36 Milwaukee Braves batters he faces, before losing the perfect game in the 13th inning.
1966 Before a crowd of 50,671 at Fulton County Stadium, the Braves play their first game in Atlanta after moving from Milwaukee. Joe Torre hits two home runs for the Braves, but Willie Stargell spoils the occasion with a two-run homer in the 13th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3 – 2 victory.
1963 The Houston Colt .45s send young Manny Mota to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a prospect and cash. For five years, Mota will be a solid fourth outfielder for the Pirates and an outstanding pinch hitter.
The Detroit Tigers sell All-Star first baseman Hank Greenberg to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1946, Greenberg led the American League with 44 home runs and 127 RBI, but will slump to 25 home runs and 74 RBI with the Pirates and will retire after the season. Greenberg is elected to the Hall of Fame in 1956.
In a busy day of trading, the Yankees acquire pitchers Dock Ellis and Ken Brett, and 2B Willie Randolph from the Pirates for hurler Doc Medich. In a separate deal with the Angels, the club trades Bobby Bonds for OF Mickey Rivers and pitcher Ed Figueroa.
Pirates rookie right fielder Roberto Clemente pounds Dodger pitching in the opener of a double-header, doing most of his damage against former minor league teammate Ed Roebuck. “Eddie was celebrating his 24th bithday,” reported the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, “but Roberto Clemente apparently didn’t know about it.”
1974 The Pirates Ken Brett no-hits the Padres until the ninth inning, settling for a two-hit 6-0 shutout in the first game of the doubleheader. In the second game, Brett’s two-run pinch-hit triple gives the Bucs an 8-7 win.
