1961 The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Athletics agree on a six-player trade. The Orioles acquire outfielders Whitey Herzog and Russ Snyder from the Athletics in exchange for infielder Wayne Causey, pitcher Jim Archer, and outfielders Bob Boyd and Al Pilarcik.
Orioles outfielder Frank Robinson hits the only ball ever completely out of Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. The shot clears the left-field single-deck grandstand’s rear wall, 451-feet away, going an estimated 541 feet. The hit comes off Indians hurler Luis Tiant. Tiant had pitched 27 scoreless innings in a row prior to the shot.
Winners of the 2013 Gold Glove Awards are announced. The Baltimore Orioles, who set an all-time record by committing only 54 errors as a team, take home three…SS J.J. Hardy, 3B Manny Machado and CF Adam Jones. 8 of the recipients are first-time winners, while Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina takes home his sixth award.
2001 At Safeco Field, Seattle Mariners ace Aaron Sele edges the Baltimore Orioles, 2-1. Sele is now 8-0 and the Mariners are 40-12 en route to a record 116-win season! The Orioles’ only run is Cal Ripken, Jr.’s 420th career home run.
1997 In an unprecedented move, Davey Johnson resigns the same day he is named AL Manager of the Year. Despite the fact that Johnson ended the Orioles 13-year playoff drought in 1996 and led them to the league’s best record in 1997, a dispute over $10,500 in fines of second baseman Roberto Alomar ends Johnson’s time in Baltimore.
1960 Baltimore Orioles shortstop, Ron Hansen, is voted AL Rookie of the Year, getting twenty-two of twenty-four votes. The other votes go to teammates Chuck Estrada and Jim Gentile. Hansen will spend 15 seasons in MLB, all of them in the American League.
Doc Medich of the Texas Rangers saved the life of a 61-year-old fan who had a heart attack before a game against the Orioles at Baltimore. Medich, a med student, administered heart massage until help arrived.
The Baltimore Orioles ended their 21-game losing streak with their first victory of the season, 9-0 over the Chicago White Sox on a combined four-hitter by Mark Williamson and Dave Schmidt. The streak is an American League record.
