1925 Eddie Collins of the Chicago White Sox becomes the sixth major leaguer to collect 3,000 hits after hitting a double against Washington Senators pitcher Walter Johnson. Collins will end his career with 3,315 hits.
Needing 145 hits to reach 3,000, Harold Baines agrees to a minor league contract with the White Sox. The 21-season veteran, who will be 42 during the season, played with the Orioles and White Sox last season. He will get into 32 games with the club and add 11 hits before retiring.
1992 Robin Yount became the 17th player to reach 3,000 hits in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 5-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Yount singled to right-center off Cleveland’s Jose Mesa in the seventh inning. He will end his career with 3,142 hits.
