Future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine of the Braves becomes the first National League pitcher in twenty years to win twenty games in three consecutive years. Fergie Jenkins of the Cubs (and also in the Hall of Fame) was the last to do the trick.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Paul Splittorff, whose 166 victories in 13 seasons are the most in club history, retires. His lone 20-win season was in 1973, when the Royals had a team record of 88 wins and finished second in their division.
