Babe Ruth announces his retirement as a player at age 40. Six years later to the day, Ruth’s long-time teammate with the New York Yankees, Lou Gehrig, dies of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 37 in New York. From that time on, the illness is popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
