1961
Houston voters approve a bond to finance the construction of a luxury domed stadium, clearing the final hurdle standing between the city and Major League Baseball. Construction on the stadium began in 1962, and it officially opened in 1965. The stadium will be known as the Astrodome, and will be nicknamed the “8th Wonder of the World.” It served as home to the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB) from its opening in 1965 until 1999.
