On the Bump: Throwing Out a First Pitch at a Professional Game
As a baseball junkie I have been privileged to accomplish several things on my “bucket list” (that’s a Gatorade bucket from the dugout, of course). Earlier this year we crossed off the Spring Training in Arizona item, and we would like to make the AZ Fall League as well. And, to be honest, nothing has compared with any of the trips to the Hall of Fame!
But, last night, through a series of unexpected events, I was allowed the privilege of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch for the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League. They are the AA affiliate of the St. Louis club. Around here they are often known as the “baby Birds.”
I would love to say that I showed a bit of the old form and threw a strike. But I try hard not to lie. And that would definitely be a whopper! I panicked and rushed the throw. If there had been a left-handed batter at the plate his ankle would have paid a price!
Oh, but it was a blast! The Cardinals people were amazing and made it a laugh riot from the start to the finish. Andrew Knizner (remember that name) was the catcher who made the sharp backhanded scoop and he was terrific. He definitely has a new fan rooting for him to make it in the bigs.
If YOU ever get the chance…take it!! It is already sure that you will NOT be the worst ever now that I have thrown mine.
