1976 The Cardinals’ Reggie Smith hit 3 home runs—two right-handed and one left-handed—driving in five runs in a 7-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Smith’s third homer was a walk-off with two outs in the ninth inning.
1946 Claude Passeau, a right-handed starter for the Chicago Cubs makes his first error since September 21, 1941, ending his streak with a MLB pitcher’s fielding record of 273 consecutive errorless chances.
1999 2019 Hall of Fame inductee Edgar Martinez hit three home runs, tying a MLB record with five homers in two games, to give the Seattle Mariners a 10-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. Martinez homered twice in the series opener the day before.
1973 Angels outfielder Bobby Valentine tries to scale an outfield wall to prevent a Dick Green home run during a 5-4 loss to the Athletics. He catches his spikes in the wall and breaks his leg. He will miss the remainder of the 1973 season.
1981 Len Barker pitches the ninth perfect game in the 20th century. The Indians righty hurls the 3-0 perfecto over the Blue Jays before just 7,290 fans on a rainy night in Cleveland. Barker, the 1980 strikeout leader in the A.L., fans 11 Jays.
